The Armed Forces of Ukraine – are the military forces, entrusted by the Constitution of Ukraine with the defense of Ukraine, protection of its sovereignty, territorial indivisibility and inviolability.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are tasked with deterring and repelling armed aggression, defending the nation's airspace and territorial waters (as defined by law), and participating in counter-terrorism efforts.
In accordance with Ukrainian law, formations and military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine can be involved in various measures, including:
- related to the legal regime of martial law and state of emergency,
- to ensure national security and defense, to repel and deter the armed aggression of the Russian Federation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions,
- to organize and support resistance movements, conduct military psychological operations,
- to combat terrorism and piracy,
- to protect the life, health of citizens and state-owned facilities (property) outside Ukraine, ensure their safety and evacuation (return),
- to strengthen border protection,
- to protect Ukraine's sovereign rights in its exclusive (maritime) economic zone and on the continental shelf and their legal formalization,
- to ensure the safety of Ukraine's national maritime navigation on the high seas or anywhere outside the jurisdiction of any state,
- to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, counteract the illegal transportation of weapons and drugs, psychotropic substances, and related materials or precursors on the high seas,
- to respond to natural and man-made emergencies,
- to provide military assistance to other states, as well as to participate in international military cooperation, international anti-terrorist, anti-piracy and other international operations to maintain peace and security based on international treaties of Ukraine and by the procedure and conditions established by the legislation of Ukraine.
